Umberto Lanaro(1930–2023)

Umberto Lanaro

Naples, 1962 — Viola

Umberto Lanaro (1930–2023) was an Italian violin maker whose long career extended across much of the second half of the twentieth century.

Born in Padua in 1930, Lanaro began making instruments at an early age under the guidance of his elder brother, the violin maker Luigi Lanaro. After working alongside his brother, Umberto spent several years in Argentina, where he continued his work in Buenos Aires. Following his return to Italy, he worked for a period in Naples before eventually establishing himself near Padua, where he continued making and restoring instruments for many decades.

The Naples period represents a relatively short and particularly interesting chapter in Lanaro's long career. In 1959 he established a workshop on Via Chiaia in Naples, remaining there until 1964. During these years he developed relationships with prominent musicians and further established his reputation as a professional maker and restorer.

This viola was made in Naples in 1962, placing it directly within this period of his career.

With a body length of 42.8 cm, it is an exceptionally large viola by contemporary standards, particularly in comparison with instruments commonly encountered in Japan today.

Its dimensions are reflected in its playing character: when played, the instrument produces a large-scale and powerful sound with considerable volume, making the physical size of the viola immediately apparent in its acoustic presence.

The two-piece maple back displays exceptionally attractive, strong and regular figure, complemented by similarly figured ribs. A transparent golden-amber varnish allows the natural character of the maple to remain clearly visible.

The spruce table is combined with elongated f-holes and clearly defined edgework, producing a strong and balanced visual character appropriate to the instrument's generous proportions. The scroll, finished in the same warm golden varnish, has a direct and confident character.

Large violas are not unknown within Lanaro's output: documented examples measuring around 42 cm appear in specialist archives. At 42.8 cm, however, the present instrument stands at the particularly large end of this spectrum and represents an interesting example of his approach to viola making.

The viola is accompanied by two important documents: a certificate by Eric Blot and an original certificate by Umberto Lanaro himself.

Together, these provide particularly valuable documentation for an instrument dating from this distinctive period of the maker's career.
