2001年、滞在先のブエノスアイレスでOmar Nigrelliの工房に出入りしたことをきっかけに楽器製作の世界へ入り、帰欧後はフランスのÉcole Nationale de Lutherie de Mirecourtで本格的に製作を学び、2006年に卒業。その後Brussels、Maastricht、Barcelonaなど各地の工房で経験を積み、2008年にはスペイン・Santiago de CompostelaでGonzalo Bayoloのアシスタントとなりました。現在はLivinhac-le-Hautに自身の工房を構え、特にヴィオラとチェロの製作を中心に活動しています。
Bontenのヴィオラは、楽器としての豊かな響きを追求しながら、奏者にとって無理のないサイズと演奏性を両立させようとする点も特徴のひとつです。実際に40cm前後から41cmを超えるものまで様々なサイズの作品が製作され、比較的コンパクトな作品についても、そのレスポンスやプロジェクションが高く評価されています。
今回のヴィオラは、Benoit Bonten自身のPersonal Modelによる2026年の新作です。
製作段階から本人より仕上がり、特に音について非常に自信のある作品との連絡を受けております。

Benoit Bonten, born in Verviers, Belgium in 1983, is a contemporary maker currently based in Aveyron in southern France.
His path into instrument making began in Buenos Aires in 2001, where he spent time in the workshop of Omar Nigrelli. After returning to Europe, he studied at the École Nationale de Lutherie de Mirecourt, graduating in 2006. He subsequently gained experience in workshops in Brussels, Maastricht and Barcelona, before becoming assistant to Gonzalo Bayolo in Santiago de Compostela in 2008. Today, Bonten works from his own workshop in Livinhac-le-Haut, devoting himself principally to the making of violas and cellos.
One of the particularly interesting aspects of Bonten's viola making is his pursuit of a rich and projecting viola sound while maintaining comfortable dimensions and ease of playing. His violas have been made in a variety of sizes, including instruments around 40–41 cm, with several examples receiving particular praise for their response and projection despite their relatively manageable dimensions.
The viola is a new instrument made in 2026 on Benoit Bonten's own Personal Model.
During the making of the instrument, Bonten expressed particular confidence in the result, especially in its sound.
Created by a maker who has devoted a significant part of his work to the viola and cello, this new Personal Model offers an exciting opportunity to experience Bonten's individual approach to contemporary viola making.
