Viola (41.0cm) , Francesco Bissolotti, Cremona 2002
Francesco Bissolotti
Cremona, 2002 — Viola
Francesco Bissolotti (1929–2019) was one of the most influential Cremonese makers of the second half of the twentieth century, playing an important role in the revival and continuation of the classical Cremonese tradition.
Born in Soresina in the province of Cremona, Bissolotti initially worked as a woodcarver and engraver before entering the International School of Violin Making in Cremona in 1957. He graduated in 1961 under Pietro Sgarabotto and also attended restoration courses taught by Giuseppe Ornati and Ferdinando Garimberti. His subsequent collaboration and close association with Simone Fernando Sacconi became particularly important in the development of his understanding of historical Cremonese construction.
Together with Sacconi, Bissolotti was involved in the reorganisation and study of the Stradivari material preserved in Cremona. From 1965 to 1970 he served as curator of the museum's musical-instrument collection, while his long teaching career at the Cremona violin-making school allowed him to transmit his approach to subsequent generations of makers. He became a particularly committed advocate of the traditional Cremonese internal mould — forma interna — method, regarding it as fundamental to the classical Cremonese tradition.
This viola was made in Cremona in 2002, during the mature period of Bissolotti's career.
Its two-piece maple back displays striking, regular figure beneath a transparent reddish-orange to warm brown varnish, with similarly attractive figure visible in the ribs. The spruce table, elongated f-holes, clearly defined edgework and carefully executed purfling contribute to a strong and coherent visual character.
The scroll is finished in the same warm varnish and displays a confident, flowing treatment consistent with the overall character of the instrument.
More than two decades after its construction, the viola remains in very fine overall condition, showing only minor superficial marks and light signs of use.
Importantly, the instrument is accompanied by an original certificate by Francesco Bissolotti himself, providing valuable documentation directly from the maker.
A beautifully preserved example from the mature period of a maker whose work and teaching played an important part in the continuation of Cremonese violin making in the twentieth century.
