独学から製作を始めたのち、弦楽器製作について学びを深め、イタリア国内外の製作家との交流を通じて自身の技術を発展させました。Feletto Umbertoを拠点として活動し、その名はUdineおよびFriuli地方における20世紀の弦楽器製作の記録にも残されています。
製作においては古典的なクレモナの名器を重要な基礎とし、とりわけ**Antonio StradivariとGiuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù”**の作品から着想を得たモデルを製作したとされています。主としてヴァイオリンを手掛ける一方、ヴィオラ、チェロ、コントラバスも製作していました。また、黄褐色系のニスを用いることも彼の作品の特徴として記録されています。
今回ご紹介するヴァイオリンは、1986年にUdineで製作された一挺です。
端正な輪郭を持つモデルに、比較的長く直線的なステムを持つf字孔、明瞭なコーナーとエッジワークが組み合わされています。二枚接ぎの裏板には細かく均整の取れた杢を持つメイプルが使用され、透明感のある黄褐色からアンバーブラウンのニスが、その木目を美しく引き立てています。
ラベルには “Bruno Tondo / fece in Udine / 1986” と記され、製作者自身の署名も確認することができます。
クレモナの古典的なモデルを製作の基礎としながら、イタリア北東部Friuliの地で製作活動を続けたBruno Tondo。クレモナやトスカーナとはまた異なる、20世紀後半のイタリア地方製作の広がりを知るうえでも興味深い一挺です。

Bruno Tondo was an Italian violin maker associated with Udine and the surrounding region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy.
Initially self-taught, Tondo subsequently pursued further studies in violin making and developed his knowledge through contact with makers both in Italy and abroad. Working in Feletto Umberto near Udine, he is also recorded among the makers active within the twentieth-century violin-making tradition of the Friuli region.
His work was rooted in the classical Cremonese tradition, with particular inspiration drawn from the instruments of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù.” Although he concentrated principally on violins, Tondo also made violas, cellos and double basses. Contemporary biographical sources additionally note the use of a characteristic yellow-brown varnish in his work.
The violin presented here was made in Udine in 1986.
The instrument displays a well-proportioned model with relatively elongated f-holes, clearly defined corners and carefully executed edgework. The two-piece maple back shows fine, regular figure beneath a transparent amber to yellow-brown varnish that allows the character of the wood to remain clearly visible.
Its original label reads “Bruno Tondo / fece in Udine / 1986” and bears the maker's handwritten signature.
Rooted in the classical Cremonese models while created within the distinctive regional setting of Friuli, this violin offers an interesting example of Italian violin making in northeastern Italy during the latter part of the twentieth century.
The violin is accompanied by a certificate by the Genoa-based violin maker and expert Alberto Giordano.
