1985年から1986年にかけて、チェコスロヴァキアの名工 Vladimir Pilar のもとで製作を学び、その後イタリアへ渡り、クレモナの Istituto Professionale Internazionale “Antonio Stradivari” に入学。Giorgio Cè、Stefano Coniaに師事し、1992年に卒業しました。さらに1992年から1996年までクレモナのCEE（欧州共同体）工房で製作に携わり、この時期から名工 Gio Batta Morassi の指導のもとで研鑽を重ねています。
Serranoの製作は、Amati、Guarneri、Stradivariに代表される古典的なクレモナ派の伝統を基礎としています。製作方法だけでなくモデルにも古典クレモナの様式を取り入れ、伝統的な造形を自身の感性によって現代へと受け継いでいます。温かみのある赤褐色のニスも彼の作品を特徴づける要素のひとつで、Antonio Stradivariの初期作品から着想を得たものとされています。
キューバに生まれ、ボヘミアでの学びを経てクレモナへ渡り、現代クレモナを代表する製作家たちのもとで培った経験を自身の製作へと昇華してきたSerrano。異なる製作文化を経験しながらも、その作品の中心には一貫して古典クレモナへの深い敬意が感じられます。
Diego Alberto Serrano, born in Havana, Cuba in 1955, is a violin maker who has established his career within the contemporary Cremonese tradition.
In 1985–86, he studied violin making with the distinguished Czech maker Vladimir Pilar in Hradec Králové, Bohemia. He subsequently moved to Italy and continued his education at the Istituto Professionale Internazionale “Antonio Stradivari” in Cremona, studying under Giorgio Cè and Stefano Conia and graduating in 1992. From 1992 to 1996, Serrano worked in the CEE workshop in Cremona, while continuing to refine his craft under the guidance of the renowned master Gio Batta Morassi.
Serrano’s work is firmly rooted in the classical Cremonese tradition, drawing particular inspiration from the great families of Amati, Guarneri and Stradivari. These influences can be found both in his working methods and in the models he employs, interpreted through his own approach as a contemporary maker. His instruments are also distinguished by a warm reddish-brown varnish inspired by the early work of Antonio Stradivari.
Born in Cuba, trained in Bohemia and ultimately established within the violin-making tradition of Cremona, Serrano brings together a particularly rich range of influences and experience. Yet at the heart of his work remains a deep respect for the classical Cremonese tradition, carried forward through the hands of a contemporary maker.
