Giorgio Scalmati, born in Mantua, Italy in 1938, is an Italian violin maker whose work reflects both the traditions of his native Mantua and the influence of contemporary Cremonese violin making. He gained experience in the workshop of Bruno Barbieri and also studied under the distinguished Cremonese maker Gio Batta Morassi, gradually developing a style of his own.
Alongside this Cremonese influence, Scalmati maintained a strong interest in the modern Mantuan school and became particularly known for instruments inspired by the work of Stefano Scarampella. He produced violins, violas and cellos, and during the 1990s his craftsmanship received considerable recognition at international violin-making competitions.
The violin presented here was made in Mantua in 1996, a particularly interesting period in Scalmati's career. In the same year, his work received recognition for its varnish at the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Making Competition in Poznań. This followed first prize for violin at the 1993 Budapest competition and his selection as a finalist at the 1994 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow.
Rooted in the violin-making culture of Mantua while incorporating the craftsmanship he developed through his association with Morassi, Scalmati established a distinctive approach of his own. This 1996 violin represents an especially interesting example from a period in which his work was receiving significant international recognition.
