Violin, Guido Maraviglia, Pistoia 1988 - “Valente”
木工職人であった父の工房で幼い頃から木に親しみ、1924年、16歳の時に最初のヴァイオリンを製作。その後、PistoiaのPontelungoを拠点として長い製作活動を続けました。古典的なクレモナ派やフィレンツェ派のモデルを基礎とする一方、自身のモデルにも取り組み、ヴァイオリンだけでなくヴィオラやチェロなど数多くの弦楽器を残しています。現在では、20世紀トスカーナの弦楽器製作を語るうえで重要な製作家の一人として位置づけられています。
Maravigliaの製作における興味深い特徴のひとつが、完成した楽器にそれぞれ名前を与えることがあった点です。Pistoiaに残る資料によれば、完成後に現れた楽器の特徴などに応じて名前を付け、それを内部ラベルに記していました。
今回ご紹介するヴァイオリンは、1988年にPistoiaで製作された一挺です。ラベルには製作者名、製作地、年号とともに、手書きで**「VALENTE」**と記されており、Maravigliaが個々の作品に与えた名前を現在まで伝えています。
二枚板のメイプルによる裏板には美しい杢が広がり、透明感を保ったオレンジから赤褐色のニスが木材の表情を引き立てています。比較的伸びやかなf字孔と明瞭なエッジワークを備え、長年木工に携わったMaravigliaらしい、落ち着きのある製作を見ることができます。
また、本楽器にはEric Blot氏による証明書が付属します。
1924年に最初のヴァイオリンを製作してから長いキャリアを重ねたMaravigliaにとって、本作が製作された1988年はすでに80歳を迎える年にあたります。若い時代からPistoiaで積み重ねてきた製作経験を背景に生み出された、彼の晩年期を伝える興味深い一挺です。

Pistoia, 1988 — “Valente”
Guido Maraviglia (1908–2001) was one of the notable twentieth-century violin makers associated with Pistoia in Tuscany.
Born into a family of woodworkers, Maraviglia became familiar with woodworking from an early age in his father’s workshop. He completed his first violin in 1924, at the age of sixteen, and subsequently pursued a remarkably long career as a maker in Pontelungo, Pistoia. His work encompassed classical Cremonese and Florentine models as well as patterns of his own, and today he is recognised as an important figure within twentieth-century Tuscan violin making.
One particularly interesting aspect of Maraviglia’s work was his practice of giving individual instruments their own names. Records from Pistoia describe how he would sometimes name an instrument according to the character it revealed once completed, recording that name on the internal label.
The violin presented here was made in Pistoia in 1988. Alongside the maker’s name, place and date, its original label bears the handwritten name “VALENTE,” preserving this distinctive aspect of Maraviglia’s working tradition.
The two-piece maple back displays attractive figure beneath a transparent orange to reddish-brown varnish. The instrument is further characterised by its elongated f-holes and clearly defined edgework, reflecting the assured craftsmanship of a maker with many decades of experience in working with wood and bowed instruments.
The violin is accompanied by a certificate by Eric Blot.
Having made his first violin in 1924, Maraviglia was already entering his eighties when this instrument was completed in 1988. It therefore represents an interesting example from the later period of an exceptionally long career rooted in the violin-making tradition of Pistoia.
