幼少期からヴァイオリンを学ぶとともに、若くしてCarraraの製作家 Cesare Maggiali の工房に出入りし、わずか13歳で最初のヴァイオリンを製作したと伝えられています。その後、ヴァイオリン、ヴィオラ、チェロを製作しましたが、残された作品の数は比較的限られています。
Giarelliの製作を理解するうえで特に重要なのが、20世紀トスカーナを代表する製作家 Igino Sderci（1884–1983） からの影響です。Giarelli自身がSderciの製作を高く評価し、その作品を様式的な手本としていたことが記録されており、Sderciについての専門資料でも、Giarelliの作風にはその影響を明確に見いだすことができると指摘されています。
また、Giarelliは木材の扱いにも独自の考えを持っていました。十分に自然乾燥した材を選び、楽器を白木の状態まで完成させた後、さらに数年間置いてからニスを施したと伝えられています。生産数を追うのではなく、時間をかけて一本ずつ製作する姿勢も彼の作品を特徴づけています。
今回ご紹介するヴァイオリンは、Carraraで1970年に製作された一挺です。
写真からも、端正に切られたf字孔、明瞭なエッジワークとパーフリング、そして木目を美しく浮かび上がらせる透明感のある赤褐色のニスを見ることができます。Giarelliの1980年製カルテットについても、「明確に切られたf字孔」「正確なパーフリング」「深いエッジのフルーティング」「木目を際立たせる透明な赤色のニス」と記録されており、今回の個体にも彼の成熟した製作に通じる特徴を見ることができます。
20世紀トスカーナの製作伝統、そしてIgino Sderciへとつながる様式的背景を現在に伝える、Ovidio Giarelliの興味深い作品です。

Ovidio Giarelli (1921–2006) was an Italian violin maker born in Carrara, Tuscany, where he remained closely associated with violin making throughout his life.
Giarelli studied the violin from childhood and, while still young, spent time in the workshop of the Carrara maker Cesare Maggiali. He is reported to have completed his first violin at only thirteen years of age. He subsequently made violins, violas and cellos, although his overall production remained relatively limited.
An important element in understanding Giarelli's work is the influence of the distinguished Tuscan maker Igino Sderci (1884–1983). Giarelli greatly admired Sderci's instruments and looked to his work as a stylistic reference. Modern research on Sderci likewise identifies characteristics in Giarelli's stylistic development that clearly reflect Sderci's influence.
Giarelli also took particular care in his selection and preparation of materials. He worked with well-seasoned wood and is reported to have allowed instruments to rest for several years in the white before completing the varnishing process. His production was relatively limited, reflecting a working method in which considerable time was devoted to each instrument.
The violin presented here was made in Carrara in 1970.
The instrument displays cleanly cut f-holes, clearly defined edgework and purfling, together with a transparent reddish-brown varnish that allows the figure of the maple to remain particularly visible. Interestingly, published descriptions of Giarelli's 1980 quartet similarly note the precise purfling, clean cutting of the soundholes, pronounced edge channeling and highly transparent red varnish—characteristics that provide useful context for examining the present instrument.
With its roots in twentieth-century Tuscan violin making and its stylistic connection to the work of Igino Sderci, this violin represents a particularly interesting example of Ovidio Giarelli's work.
The violin is accompanied by a certificate by the Genoa-based violin maker and expert Alberto Giordano.
