Violin, Paolo Erba, Mariano Comense 1919

Paolo Erba
Mariano Comense, 1919 — Violin
Paolo Erba (1874–1927) was an Italian violin maker active in Mariano Comense, Lombardy, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
He is recorded as having begun making instruments around 1888 and had established a reputation as a maker by the beginning of the twentieth century. Erba received several distinctions associated with the Santa Cecilia competitions in Rome, and in 1904 a quartet of his instruments exhibited in London was awarded a silver medal.
A particularly interesting aspect of Erba's career is his connection with Leandro Bisiach (1864–1945), one of the most influential figures in modern Italian violin making. According to the biographical record compiled by John Dilworth, Erba visited and worked with Bisiach around 1918–1920.
The present violin was made in Mariano Comense in 1919, placing it directly within this particularly interesting period of Erba's career.
This chronological connection should not be interpreted as evidence that the present instrument itself was made in the Bisiach workshop. It does, however, place the violin within an important period in Erba's development and activity as a maker.
The instrument retains its original label: “ERBA PAOLO fece in MARIANO COMENSE 1919”
The two-piece maple back displays fairly regular, medium to narrow figure, rising slightly from the centre towards the flanks.
The two-piece spruce table has broader grain, opening further towards the flanks. The ribs and scroll are of maple similar to that of the back, and the instrument is covered with an orange varnish.
Slender, elongated f-holes, clearly defined edgework and the strongly figured maple back contribute to an elegant and distinctive appearance. More than a century after its construction, the instrument continues to display clearly the craftsmanship of its maker.
Above all, however, it is the sound of this particular violin that has made a particularly strong impression on us.
In our experience playing and evaluating the instrument, it combines substantial volume with a clear tonal core and excellent carrying power, retaining its presence remarkably well at a distance.
It is therefore compelling not only for its maker, date and documentation, but above all with its substantial volume, focused tonal core and impressive carrying power, it is a violin that we particularly recommend experiencing as a musical instrument in its own right
The violin is accompanied by a certificate issued by Eric Blot SRL.
